# 10: promising way to detect endometriosis; optimising female hormone health & more
technology and research transforming women’s health and wellness
Hello from HealthyHer!
Have you heard about endometriosis? It is a serious and painful condition that can be debilitating to women and may impact their ability to get pregnant. Even though over 10% of women suffer from endometriosis worldwide, it takes 7-10 years to get diagnosed. Why so long?!
One reason is cultural. Pelvic pain and cramps, which are often associated with endometriosis, have been normalized as a condition of uterus holders, even among the practitioners. Another reason is the lack of non-invasive technology to detect endometriosis. Today, the diagnosis usually requires a surgical procedure.
While it is difficult to change the culture, the technology is soldiering on. Here's some good news: in a recent trial, investigators successfully used menstrual blood to screen for endometriosis. When developed, this approach could lead to a simple and non-invasive way to diagnose the condition, which would be a major win for women everywhere.
In the meantime, what are the symptoms we should be on the lookout for? Painful periods, pain during or after sex, as well as pelvic pain. Fertility problems and symptoms characteristic to IBS and bladder issues can also be a sign of endometriosis. HealthyHer team is sending warm hugs to all the women out there we are dealing with this difficult condition <3.
