Why Don’t We Study Clitoris, and a bit more on that topic.
Technology and research transforming women’s health and wellness.
Hi there,
It is Thursday, which means we are saying hello to a new edition of the HealthyHer newsletter!
Why Don’t We Study Clitorises?
We know incredibly, embarrassingly, and dangerously little about one of the main sources of women’s sexual pleasure -- the cliteris. The New York Times recently published an article about the detrimental consequences of this for women’s health.
The article features experiences of several women who lost their ability to orgasm following medical procedures performed in the vicinity of their cliterises. Such dreadful stories could have been avoided if the state of knowledge of the vulva -- the outer female genitalia that includes the cliteris -- had been more developed. Scientists only now are learning about the vulva’s deep and complex structure. Shockingly, even these efforts have been incredibly scarce.
Why is our knowledge of the vulva so poor, especially when compared to its male counterpart - the penis? The article points out that our limited knowledge is grounded in the lack of value of women’s sexual pleasure. There is a pervasive culture of viewing the organs related to female pleasure as unimportant and unworthy of medical research, especially when compared to child birthing functions or male orgasm.
